How the Gods and Goddesses Were First Created
At first there was only darkness then Ogdoad awoke. Ogdoad (meaning eight) consisted of eight gods Nun, Nanuet, Hu, Haunet, Ku, Kauket, Amun and Amaunet. They caused a hill called Ben-Ben to rise out of the first waters. On the hill was an egg. When the egg hatched there came the god Atmun the all-father was born.
Ogdoad withdrew and watched how the world would unfold. Amun was alone. He spat on the ground and his son Shu and daughter Tefnun rose. Atmun blessed Shu and Tefnun and gave them both great power. He gave Shu power of air and the sky. Tefnun had power over moisture. Together they begun to separate land from water and sky. |
During this Shu and Tefnun became lost in darkness. They didn't have Amun's power to overcome it. Amun tore out his all seeing eye and tried to look for them and bring them back. In its it's place he grew a new eye. Shu and Tefnun came back with the eye which Amun put on his crown so to see all.(That is the eye that rested on the crown of the pharaoh it's called the Udjat Eye).
Amun was filled with delight and happiness at seeing his children that he wept great tears. When the tears hit the ground life sprang everywhere. Shu took Tefnun as his wife. She soon gave birth to Geb and Nut. Geb became the god of the earth and Nut became Goddess of the sky, standing over Geb with Shu and Tefnun holding her up. Nut gave birth to Osis and Ste and the Goddess Isis to her brother/husband Geb. Nut and Geb became the first god and goddess of the world of men, while the others became great gods of the earth and sky. |
